The Local Area

With the pier, from which the Outer Hebrides passenger service operates, just a mile away we are perfectly placed for those staying over the night before taking the ferry.
Uig is on the western side of the Trotternish peninsula, this area is home to many of the must see sights on Skye so Uig is both a great base for a few nights stay or just a single night whilst touring around.

Within the local area you can find the Fairy Glen, Duntulm Castle, Rubha Hunnish, Staffin beach with dinosaur footprints, the Quairaing, Kilt Rock waterfalls, the Old Man of Storr, Lealt Falls, Trotternish ridge and Portree. There are also many other less well known sites such as Hughs Castle or the ruins of Flora Macdonalds family home.

We can assist you in planning your days or if you prefer there are a number of tours available which will take the stress out of visiting these beauty spots.

Out & About

Wildlife

Skye has an abundance of wildlife, sometimes all you need to enjoy this is a bit of time, a good eye and a little luck! If you want to improve your chances of seeing some of the wildlife there are a number of tours on both land and sea.
From our garden we often see;
Golden eagles
Sea eagles
Buzzards
Seals
Otters
Salmon & sea trout jumping
A good selection of both garden and sea birds

There are a couple of nature spotting boats which operate from Uig, whilst out on these trips we have seen the following;

Sea eagles, golden eagles, basking sharks, porpoise, dolphins (sometimes hundreds at a time!), minke whales and for up to 4 months of the year we have a wonderful colony of puffins that make the islands in the bay their home.

Fishing

Skye is not well known for its fishing but it does boast some great rivers and lochs on which to cast a fly, or if you prefer there are many locations where good sized pollock and mackerel can be found.

Having fished many of these myself I can assure you that even on a driech day, with little biting, sitting in a boat in the shadow of the old man of Storr will still bring a smile to your face.

Walking

Skye has a good mixture of walks. Whether you are looking for your next munro or just a leisurely stroll in a stunning landscape there is something for everyone.

Although Skye can be busy during the season there are many out of the way places that are not that well trodden so if you are looking for somewhere off the beaten track where you can be one of just a few then we can help you plan your days.

The northern Lights

Can you really see the northern lights on Skye? Yes indeed, in fact you can often sit out in the garden and enjoy a great display of the lights, even if you miss out on these a clear night will reward you with amazing views of the milky way, shooting stars and regular passing of both the international space station and satellites.
